Infant Chiropractor Guide for Parents

Updated November 8, 2026

An infant chiropractor checks a baby’s spine and nervous system using very light, gentle touch. At Davidson Family Wellness in Overland Park, KS, we care for children from newborns to teens. Our team includes Dr. Matthew Ryan, an ICPA member who is Webster Certified.

This guide answers the questions parents ask most. Is it safe? What happens at a visit? How do you choose the right chiropractor for infants?

What Is Infant Chiropractic Care?

Infant chiropractic care is gentle care for babies. The chiropractor looks at how the spine moves and how the baby moves and responds. If care is a good fit, the touch is soft and slow.

Birth can put stress on a baby’s spine. So can the bumps of early life. Infant care aims to find that stress early and support healthy growth.

Is Chiropractic Safe for Infants?

This is the first question most parents ask. Care for babies uses very light pressure. It is about what you would use to test if a tomato is ripe.

Every first visit starts with a health history and a gentle exam. We explain each step before we start. You stay with your baby the whole time.

Chiropractic care does not replace your pediatrician. If your baby has a fever, is not feeding well or seems ill, call your pediatrician first. The American Academy of Pediatrics has a helpful page on colic and crying in babies.

Why Parents Look for a Chiropractor for Infants

Parents in Overland Park and Lenexa bring their babies to us for many reasons. The most common are:

  • Colic and reflux. Long bouts of crying or spitting up after feeds.
  • Trouble sleeping. A baby who struggles to settle.
  • Torticollis. A tight neck that keeps the head turned to one side.
  • A check after birth. Some parents just want a gentle check after a long or hard delivery.

What to Expect at Your Baby’s First Visit

  1. Health history. We ask about the birth, feeding, sleep and milestones.
  2. A gentle exam. We look at posture, movement and reflexes in a way that suits a baby.
  3. A clear plan. We share what we found and answer your questions.
  4. Gentle care. If care is a good fit, the touch is light and calm.

Tips for parents: Write down your questions before you come. Bring notes on the birth, feeding and sleep. A fed and rested baby is often calmer.

Pregnant Now? Prenatal Chiropractic Care

We also offer prenatal care for expecting moms. Dr. Ryan is Webster Certified. The Webster Technique is a chiropractic approach used during pregnancy. Starting care before birth lets the whole family see one team.
